Why “Iris?”
Iris, the Greek goddess of sea and sky, is the inspiration behind our work. In myth, Iris often appears in rainbow form, or as a young maiden with wings on her shoulders. For the coastal-dwelling Greeks, a rainbow’s arc was most often seen spanning the distance between cloud and sea, and so Iris was believed to replenish the rain-clouds with water from the sea. She served as the messenger for the Olympian gods–from gods to gods, and from gods to mortals. Her name contains a double meaning, being connected with both the Greek word Iris meaning “the rainbow” and eiris, meaning “messenger.” As a goddess, Iris is associated with communication, messages, the rainbow, and new endeavors.
